Gaudí arrives at the Design museum in Barcelona

Gaudí Design museum in Barcelona

The Museum of Design in Barcelona, which until now had no piece of Gaudí, has just incorporated 36 pieces of the modernist architect thanks to a loan in bailment for 30 years of the Gaudí Chair, of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. These are different objects such as doors, ceramics, railings, flooring and furniture, coming from Gaudí buildings such as the Batlló and Milà houses, the Parc Güell or the cathedral of Palma, which are incorporated into the funds of the Museu del Disseny.

From June 2020 some of these objects will be part of the permanent exhibition in an area that will cover from the beginning of modernism until now.

“It is difficult to imagine the image of Barcelona without Gaudí, but the city so far had his pieces in the open air and not a place where it was explained,” said the deputy mayor of Barcelona, Joan Subirats. It is true that there are some pieces in the National Museum of Art of Catalonia, in the Museum of the Sagrada Família –of liturgical character– and in the Gaudí House Museum, but now they can be contemplated in the context of what can be considered as Origins of design culture. Although apparently it can be thought that these are minor works, including from a hanger of the Calvet house, a tile, a trencadís rosette, a piece of parquet and fragments of stained glass from the cathedral of Palma de Mallorca, the truth is that they are rarely seen pieces. They were exhibited for the first time in La Pedrera, in 2002, in the year Gaudí and few more times. Recently museums such as MoMA or Orsay have bought Gaudí objects to also incorporate them into their collection.

It was Joan Bassegoda Nonell, director of the Gaudí Chair between 1968 and 2000, who got these pieces for the entity, dependent on the School of Architecture, and since then most of these objects were in warehouses or even in a garage due to lack of space . Now it has been Juanjo Lahuerta, director of the chair, who with the approval of the School of Architects and the own rector of the UPC, Francesc Torres, has achieved that agreement.

Pilar Vélez, director of the Museu del Disseny, explained that all the pieces have undergone a “preventive conservation” and are now in the “reserve rooms”, waiting for their final cataloging and the selection that will be made to that the most prominent be incorporated into the permanent. The agreement provides that these objects may be assigned for temporary exhibitions in other museums, as has happened on occasion, provided it is accepted by both parties. “From now on we will be an international reference on Gaudí,” said the director.

Lahuerta explained that Gaudí’s pieces differ from current design objects because they do not respond to an industrial process or in most cases have preparatory drawings. “Gaudí is an architect who essentially does not design but works on the materials and does not depend on previous documents, he always talked about the” worker “and not the office”.

Food, health and culinary innovation in Barcelona

Torribera Mediterranean Center

Food, health and culinary innovation. They are the three axes on which the Torribera Mediterranian Center wants to take its first steps that have jointly promoted The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) and the University of Barcelona. This is a project that, for the moment, starts with an office on the top floor of La Masia, one of the buildings of the Campus de l’Alimentació de Torribera, in Santa Coloma de Gramanet, and with the announcement of a conference they will celebrate in Barcelona on October 15 and 16 in the historic building of the Central University under the statement Tomorrow Tastes Mediterranean, very similar to those successfully organized by the American private teaching institution at its headquarters in New York and Napa Valley.

The next step is expected to be the beginning of the first master focused on the Mediterranean diet (Mediterranean Diet: food, culture and culinary innovation) that will be taught from January to July, if the second attempt is successful, since last year it was not delivered due to lack of students (costs about 7,000 euros) and, as explained by the promoters, because they barely gave out to this educational program that was born as a master’s degree at the UB and aspires to become an officer. A master directed by the renowned doctors Màrius Rubiralta (Faculty of Farm and Science of Food), Ramon Estruch (Faculty of Medicine and Sciences of Health of the UB) and Michael B. Spearling (Culinary Institute of America).
Santi Mas de Xaxas, representative of The Culinary Institute in Spain, explains that they want to combine training and knowledge transfer in a practical way, reaching a student body from very varied professional fields, from the Horeca channel to health, agri-food , gastronomy, food industry, or collective cooking. They have the endorsement of renowned scientists and great chefs in their advisory councils and with the involvement of professionals who know well the relationship between cuisine and industry such as chef Isma Prados, who teaches the subject of Design and innovation of the product in Torribera and who will be the person responsible for the contents in the kitchen.

This chef sees the Torribera Mediterranian Center as “a very interesting opportunity to value a label, the Mediterranean diet, which seemed somewhat obsolete compared to others such as veganism.” Prados points out the importance of being governed by the criteria of that diet that is not only limited to the Mediterranean shores but also extends to the entire Parallel 40, which covers territories where there is a great diversity of fresh produce throughout the year ”

The leaders of the CIA have found in the virtues of a diet that has been proven scientifically healthy and that is a world heritage site, the perfect argument to expand its presence away from the United States. And it is that The Culinary Institut of America already has one foot in Asia, where it has a spectacular center in Singapore, but it still did not have it in Europe, where they finally arrive at the Campus d ‘Alimentació Torribera in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, with the complicity of the UB.
Why here and not in Italy or Greece, also candidates? Their fascination with the transcendent Predimed study, published in 2013, which showed that the Mediterranean diet is the healthiest in the world, led them to be interested in its coordinator, Dr. Ramon Estruch, of the Hospital Clínic. The complicity with him and the one they also found in who in his day was rector of the University of Barcelona, Màrius Rubiralta, has taken the project to Santa Coloma.
According to Dr. Ramon Estruch, one of the challenges of the Torribera Mediterranian Center is to obtain European aid to apply the scientific method in feeding techniques. “It’s about combining nutrition, health and gastronomy to demonstrate the influence of different culinary techniques on health.”

Among the plans of this project that has the support of Acció, is the development of studies on food and field research within the Mediterranean area, identifying good practices and promoting innovation especially around food of plant origin of the Mediterranean diet that are disappearing.
Dr. Estruch, who heads the scientific and technical committee and promoted a successful master’s degree at the Hospital Clínic on food, health and lifestyle, recognizes that from Medicine requires a greater awareness of the power of food in the health, something that he himself has been able to verify. “In the United States there are many doctors sensitive to food, but here we have a very pharmacological culture and we forget the importance, for example, of the different cooking methods in health or the richness of something apparently as simple as a stir-fry.”

It is our great landing in Europe,” says Anne McBride, from the CIA. “We don’t want to be a Basque Culinary Center, nor a CET, nor do anything that others are already doing. We are not going to teach people how to eat and we want to go more to the industry and collective sectors. ” The Clinic and the Faculty of Farm and Science of Food will play an important role in the field of research. But synergies will also be sought, adds Dr. Estruch, with centers already working in the way of improving eating and healthy habits, such as the Alícia Foundation. “Because if I have learned something over the years, it is that to do something great you have to add the efforts of many.”

Art Institute of Chicago

The Art Institute of Chicago, the second largest museum in the US, chooses the Barcelona studio to transform its extensive campus

Art Institute of Chicago

The Institute of Art of Chicago of the 21st century wants to bear the seal of the Barcelona architecture firm Barozzi Veiga. The board of directors of this museum institution – the second largest in the United States, after the New York Metropolitan Museum – announced yesterday that it had hired Barozzi Veiga to design its new campus plan and undertake a profound transformation.

The works, which can last more than a decade and involve an investment not yet specified, but of many hundreds of millions of dollars, must include the functional redefinition of the campus – which occupies a super block, equivalent to four blocks from the central area of Chicago–, the demolition of some of its current buildings, the construction of other or new plant extensions, a new program of uses of existing volumes, a renewed organization of collections and a closer relationship with the city, parks Surrounding and Lake Michigan.
As much for the dimension of the works that must be carried out as for the global relevance of the Art Institute of Chicago, this is, by far, the main assignment received by a Barcelona study abroad in a long time. And the best news from abroad for Catalan architecture since the Pritzker Prize was awarded to Olot RCR’s studio in 2017.

The venerable North American museum, whose collections fed by private donations gather 300,000 pieces from all corners of the world, some 5,000 years old, others contemporary, receive nearly two million annual visitors. Its two most characteristic architectural elements are perhaps the first and last to date: a Beaux Arts style building, designed by Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge, opened in 1893, with a facade on Michigan Avenue, and an extension, the Modern Wing , signed by the Italian Renzo Piano in 2009, which stands in the Northeast corner of the enclosure, with entrance through Monroe Street. For a century and a quarter, in successive extensions, the Art Institute has been adding buildings and facilities, to add a useful area of about 300,000 square meters, on a large plot divided in two by the city’s railway track.
Barozzi Veiga were invited by the Art Institute to participate in a restricted contest, with the request to contribute ideas for the reorganization of the campus and the optimization of its potential. They received this invitation together with some of the world’s leading architectural firms, being, after three years of discreet work, the chosen ones. It is therefore a clear commitment to an emerging firm of the museum’s steering committee, whose president, James Rondeau, argued yesterday to announce that choosing Barcelona has been a brave decision, but also inevitable after knowing his previous work.
The proposal of Barozzi Veiga, now in a phase of intentions and on which no images have been distributed – the basic project will not be disseminated before a year and a half – is synthesized in four concepts: city, train, gardens and lake. Part of a thorough analysis of the Art Institute in its current configuration, after which Barozzi Veiga formulated its action strategy, based on the four concepts cited.

GREAT MAGNITUDES
The works, with a multi-million dollar cost, will last no less than ten years

His first observation was that the museum was introverted and had a lot of room for improvement in its relationship with the city, and therefore had to reactivate and permeabilize its urban façade, mainly that of Michigan Avenue. The second was that the museum had always tried to turn its back on the railway line (Illinois Central Railrod), which cuts it in two, and that in the future it would be good to reverse this trend and consider the trains, after all a feature of Chicago identity, more like an integrable advantage than a problem to hide.

The third and fourth observations of Barozzi Veiga were that the museum despite being surrounded by several gardens and parks had little relationship with them, and that this should be corrected by a new connectivity system that redefined pedestrian circulation flows and facilitated contact with these green spaces, and even with neighboring Lake Michigan, a few blocks away in an eastbound direction. Barcelona architects believe that this strategy is the most appropriate to breathe personality and new life into a very heterogeneous set of buildings.

Chicago, cradle of skyscrapers, is one of the great American architectural squares, marked by professional buildings such as William Le Baron, Louis Sullivan, Daniel Burnham, Frank Lloyd Wright or Mies Van der Rohe. The presence of Spanish authors architecture there is limited, with the exception of Ricardo Bofill, author of a 50-storey tower erected along the Chicago River in 1992. Rafael Moneo, author of extensive international experience, and with works Like the Cathedral of Our Lady of Los Angeles, it is difficult to find an order from an American institution to a Spanish firm comparable to the one Barozzi Veiga just received.

Winners in Europe and the USA, unpublished in their city

Messi-Cirque du Soleil-Barcelona

Cirque du Soleil lifts a stadium at the Forum in Barcelona

Leo Messi

Cirque du Soleil returns to Barcelona like never before. The mythical company landed 21 years ago in the Catalan capital with Alegría, a catchy melody assembly that was the beginning of an idyll between the locals and the Québec company. And two decades later, Cirque du Soleil, the greatest symbol of the contemporary circus worldwide, not only presents a new show in the city but also premieres it. It will be on October 10 at the Parc del Fòrum, and the title seems, a priori, a safe goal: Messi10 by Cirque du Soleil. A montage inspired by the great Barça player, in his values and in the world of football and sports that will take place in huge facilities, at this time still under construction, which were presented yesterday.

And the first thing that attracts attention on the esplanade of the Forum where the new show is based is that this time there is not a giant circus tent, but a huge rectangular 17-meter-tall ship has been erected. A white and mysterious hangar in whose interior a longitudinal stage is discovered – 41 meters long by 14 meters wide – that runs through the ship and has two immense stands – with capacity for 3,000 spectators – facing each other, located on the side and side of the stage , as if it were the rival hobbies of a football game that shout and celebrate their respective teams. Of course, the ground of this reimagined soccer field is blue – to make it different, because, explained yesterday the director of production, Tyler Davidson, is a show about football, about the spirit of global football played by Cirque du Soleil, but Not a football match. And on that blue stage there will be 101 balls, some of which are common spherical but others will end up being more than surprising.

Elephantias installations arrived by 23 maritime containers from the headquarters of Cirque du Soleil in Montreal, where they have been creating this show that will unite the worlds of circus and football for two years, and will even feature a professional player on stage. In the reimagined football stadium there will be two huge screens of two tons each that will show Messi and images that have been inspired to tell the story. And suspended from the hangar deck there is already a huge 23-ton grill with hundreds of spotlights, sound devices and special effects. Everything you need for Messi10 by Cirque du Soleil to build a show that pretends to be fun, surprising and inspiring. And it will have two parts … 45 minutes each. A work in which there is no Messi, a 10, “but that all the artists who are on stage represent it, because they are the best version of themselves.”

Matías Loizaga, executive producer of this show that unites Cirque du Soleil with the Argentine company Popart Music and with Sony Music, points out that Leo Messi “permeates through the show, is a celebratory montage of the world of football through his figure , an inspiring show that upholds the values of football, hard work, what you have to do to be someone like Messi. There are no imitators of him, who is present in different ways in this interactive show in which the two stands celebrate the rivalry of the world of football and in which the public is invited to participate. ” For example, he points out, with the Messi of the day, “that he is a spectator who has arrived a few hours earlier at the facilities and has participated in the Messi10 Challenge LaLiga experience, an interactive park mounted next to the large hangar in five tents that each with a different challenge, from head goals to a virtual reality experience or a penalty shot to a robot goalkeeper. The one that accumulates the most points is the Messi of the day, an experience for young and old ”.
Loizaga points out that in the play there will be a lot of humor, including a clown from Figueres, Mateo Amieva, and that music will play a very important role, with songs by Pharrell Williams, Rosalia, White Stripes – Seven Nation Army – or The Fabulous Cadillacs and their Matador. In addition to themes of “the playlist of Messi”, which, he acknowledges, has not yet seen the final result because three weeks ago they finished the first rehearsal in Montreal. Of course, stresses that “Leo has participated in the creation of the script and numbers, we had meetings, gave feedback and opinion and made a couple of requests.” And about the choice of Messi and not of another player to create the show, he says that “it is indisputable that he is the best player in the world and we have found in him not only football achievements but hard work, improvement and values that make him unique, like the good person he is, in addition to the support he has received from his family, which has been one of the things he wanted to be reflected in the work, who is who he is for the support received from the family”.
THE MONTAGE

❏ This unique assembly began at the beginning of August with the landing in Barcelona of 23 maritime containers from the International Headquarters of Cirque du Soleil in Montreal (Canada), where the show has been created in the last 2 years.
❏ For 3 weeks, a total of 267 tons of equipment (technical equipment, clothing, props and acrobatic equipment, among others) have been transported by sea for the construction of this colossal and innovative assembly.

❏ Messi10 has 84 employees on tour in 19 countries, including 47 artists on stage.

❏ Every day more than 100 technicians participate, 60 of which are local professionals (welders, riggers, carpenters, electricians).

STAGE

❏ For the first time Cirque du Soleil designs a different scenario with an exclusive and innovative format: a reimagined soccer stadium.

❏ The scenic structure, which is 41 meters long and 14 meters wide, was designed by Cirque du Soleil in Canada and manufactured in Belgium.

❏ The public will be located in two stands, one on each side of the stage, thus causing interaction with the show and encouraging the feeling of celebration and rivalry that is experienced during football matches.

THE TECHNOLOGY

❏ The latest technology will be very present during the show thanks to an impressive grill of lights, powerful sound and multiple mobile and audiovisual elements.

❏ Messi10 has 2 high-definition screens and large dimensions (of 2 tons of weight each), which measure 2.4 meters high by 11 long. The screens will have more than 1.25 million pixels of high brightness and various lighting fixtures and other special effects.
❏ In total, the show has more than 200 kilometers of cable.

SPACE

❏ The new Cirque du Soleil show will be presented in Parc del Fòrum in a spectacular format: a mobile enclosure that is 65 meters long by 60 meters wide and at its highest point reaches 17 meters high.

❏ This colossal space that houses Messi10 could contain the water of 27 Olympic swimming pools.

‘MESSI10’ IN BARCELONA

❏ Barcelona has been chosen as the first city in the world and the only one in Spain where the new Cirque du Soleil show will be presented.

❏ During your stay in Barcelona, more than 100 people will be hired, including technicians, ushers, security, lockers and bars.

❏ The citadel built for the show covers a total of 40,000 m². The enclosure at the Parc del Fòrum will house the mobile stadium where the show and the Messi10 Challenge LaLiga attraction will be enjoyed.

Cirque du Soleil about Messi

Posted by chauffeurbarcelona on Jul 24, AM

The show artistically translates the values and secrets of the success of the Argentine player

Messi challenge 10

This noon, Cirque du Soleil has shared the first images of the creation of his new show, Messi10, which is inspired by the football player Leo Messi. For the first time this circus company is set in the world of sport to create a show, and in addition, the world premiere of Messi10 by Cirque du Soleil will be held in our country, next October 10, at the Parc del Fòrum in Barcelona.

The location has been specially chosen by the company to simulate a large soccer field, with its stands, its playing field and large screens, on which videos, texts and unpublished images of the player will be screened.
But why Messi? As explained by Sean McKeown, director of creation, “Messi is being a source of inspiration for everyone, but not only because he is a teacher who shares skills such as speed, strength or vision with the circus artists; but because, in addition, he is a humble, familiar and very human type, who has the support and admiration of many people. ” However, the director himself wanted to point out that “we are not explaining the history of his life, but the secrets of his success.”
A great team of directors, artists, choreographers, among many others, have been working for months to open the show on October 10 – until November 10 -, thus lasting a fair month. The show is divided into two parts of 45 minutes each, where each of the 46 participating artists will explain, one by one, the soccer player’s skills. Although football will be the main protagonist, the company has not wanted to leave the classic circus band, so they have added traditional track numbers: trapeze artists, trampoline jumpers or balancers.

Barcelona and 5G technology

The Catalan capital is postulated to lead the development of new

technology that can boost important advances in areas as varied as

health or mobility.

The Mediterranean flavor of Barcelona dazzles the Mobile World Congress

Barcelona y la tecnología 5G

3G came to bring the Internet to phones much more comfortable and deep than GPRS and GSM. The 4G – the technology that is used at the moment: it surpassed it to popularize the consumption of audiovisual content in a fluid way on smartphones and tablets. And the next stage in the path of the evolution of communications is the 5G, which will provide the ability to transmit information in real time. And it is that when some element is now displayed in supposedly direct – a Facebook Live, for example – there are always a few seconds of delay between the action and the moment in which it is played. A delay that the experts call latency and that the 5G eliminates by reducing it to the minimum expression.
Although it may seem subtle, the change represents an authentic revolution just when the fourth industrial revolution is underway, with the digitalization of production processes and the internet of things. For example, the road to the autonomous vehicle will be paved and will lead to disruptive advances in areas as varied as health or logistics. This special supplement from Avantgarde explains some of the most advanced applications, but there is still a lot of ground to explore. The change of paradigm is about to begin, it is expected that between 2019 and 2020 the foundations will be felt, and the year of the definitive takeoff of 5G should be 2021.
The change supposes a true revolution just when the fourth industrial revolution is under way, with the digitalization of the productive processes and the internet of things

In this context, Barcelona is running to lead the development of this nascent technology thanks to a city alliance: 5G Barcelona. “The objective is to get the city to be placed in the 5G Championships”, defines the 5G director of the Mobile World Capital Barcelona (MWCapital), Eduard Martín. It is a public-private collaboration tool sponsored by MWCapital and of which the City Council of Barcelona, the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), the i2CAT foundation, the Technological Center of Telecommunications of Catalonia ( CTTC) and Atos, among other companies. “Barcelona must be one of the big cities in the deployment of 5G technology. It is not only that the new services are tested here, but that they are consolidated in the territory “, clarifies Martín. It is structured in two aspects: first, “possible services are identified and to develop prototypes and pilot tests”, and secondly, “new technology laboratories” are created with the aim of providing services to companies and entrepreneurs, explains the director of the MWCapital. His other great support is the 5G National Observatory.
The Catalan capital is well located, and this public-private partnership has been working intensively since last year. “In addition to being a city with an evident innovative and entrepreneurial tradition, Barcelona has a good ecosystem for new technologies since the 1992 Olympic Games, it has a specialized district like the 22 @ and it can not be forgotten that with The celebration of the MWC is the mobile world capital and between 2014 and 2016 it was the first European capital of innovation “, argues Eduard Martín.

An alliance of woven city with public-private collaboration and that begins to bear its first fruits

“The 5G will be one of the major themes of the MWC this year and I think that will continue for a couple of more editions,” predicts the MWCapital spokesperson. “The change will be transversal, the 5G is a great vehicle for new services and to improve current ones; Can you imagine living a rock concert or an opera from the point of view of artists through immersive reality? ”

“In 2025 there will be 200 million objects connected to the internet, the 5G will have the ability to manage them,” he adds. It is not just a technology 100 times faster than 4G. The change that is coming is deeper, and Barcelona is ready for the challenge.

Barcelona consolidates its position as a technological hub with the arrival of more global firms

Facebook Barcelona Glories

Barcelona consolidates, even more, as a technological and innovation hub. The arrival or expansion of activities of up to ten international firms in the last four months gives the Catalan capital a power that has allowed it to attract giants such as Facebook, Lidl or Mediamarkt. They are joined by Amazon‘s biggest bet, which was already present, or the arrival of reference startups in their sectors such as N26 or Chartboost.

Access to talent, quality of life and lower costs are some of the keys that push companies to install their innovation centers in the city.
MediaMarkt, the last example

The last to announce the installation of an innovation center was MediaMarkt. The German trade giant announced earlier this month that it will launch an international technology center in El Prat de Llobregat (Barcelona) this year. This tech hub will aim to develop technological solutions for the retail trade.

In June, the German fintech N26 announced that in September it will open its second European headquarters in Barcelona. From these offices, about one hundred engineers will work on the development of the product and the technology of the company. In two or three years, the workforce could double.

May, key month

Looking back a little, May was another key month for business investments in Catalan territory. Several large movements are counted. The first, that of the Argentine satellite company  Satellogic which opened its offices in Barcelona. These offices will be the European headquarters of the company, which plans to create 100 jobs by 2020.

Another great announcement was that of Lidl, who will install its European center of excellence in Plaza Catalunya, right in the center of Barcelona. From there he will provide e-commerce and customer relationship management services at regional level in Europe and will employ 250 people.,
The Australian Moodle will also disembark in the Catalan capital. The company that aims to revolutionize education with its software, intends to create 40 jobs (it will start with ten) and has opted for Barcelona to open its first office outside its country of origin.

Although smaller, the American Chartboost, founded by two Catalans, opened an engineering office in Barcelona at the end of May. Currently, they employ 20 people.

The bet of Facebook

At the beginning of the month, the most mediatic announcement was that of Facebook. The social network made public the opening of a fake news control center that will run the Austrian company Competence Call Center (CCC). The offices will be located in the Torre Glòries, entrance door to 22 @, and will employ 500 people.

Supercomputer in Barcelona

Barcelona will host the next great European supercomputer

Supercomputer Barcelona

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center– (BSC-CNS) will house one of the next big supercomputers in Europe, as announced by the European Commission today. The machine will be called MareNostrum 5 and will have a maximum output of 200 petaflops (200,000 trillion operations per second), which will multiply by 18 the core of the current MareNostrum 4 (11.1 petaflops), the center’s main supercomputer.

Until now, each member state of the EU had to finance its own machines, but, to compete globally in this area, European countries decided to join forces through the EuroHPC initiative (HPC stands for High Performance Computation, computer high performance in English). The European Commission will finance with 840 million euros the construction of eight new supercomputers that must enter service before 2021, three of them called pre-exescale (more than 150 petaflops) and five petascale (petaflops). The three most powerful machines will be located in Barcelona (MareNostrum 5 itself), in Bologna (Italy) and in Kajaani (Finland).
These new supercomputers will be the first step of a plan of the Commission to promote supercomputing in Europe and not be left behind in this strategic area that worldwide lead the US, China and Japan, currently with machines of 122, 93 and 10 , 5 petaflops. The next goal will be to build ex-escale supercomputers, that is, with an ability to calculate exaflops (one trillion operations per second), which are foreseen for 2023.

In the case of MareNostrum 5, the Commission will contribute 100 million euros. The rest of the cost, another 100 million, will be assumed by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, the Generalitat de Catalunya, both bosses of the BSC, and the states that supported their candidacy: Portugal, Turkey and Croatia, although it has not yet been done official the distribution of the investment.

“I am convinced that the new supercomputers […] will boost Europe’s competitiveness in the digital area. We have demonstrated the strength of our European approach, which will bring concrete benefits to our citizens and help our small and medium-sized companies, “said Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, in a statement from the European Commission. The new arsenal of supercomputers “is a big step forward for Europe to reach the next level of computing capacity; It will help us advance in future-oriented technologies such as the internet of things, artificial intelligence, robotics and data analysis, “according to Andrus Ansip, vice president of the Digital Single Market.
Another crucial objective is that European science and industry can process their data within the European Union, without having to rely on machines from other regions – right now, the EU consumes more than 30% of the world’s supercomputing resources, while within its territory only contributes 5% -.
The European consortium Cineca and the Finnish center CSC, which had the support of the northern countries, as well as the BSC, were presented in April to host the three pre-exescale supercomputers. The BSC had the backing of the Spanish State, the Generalitat, and the governments of Portugal, Croatia, Turkey and Ireland, which will be the six members of the consortium that will lead the MareNostrum 5.

The European Commission has selected the candidates by technical criteria on the planned location, which the BSC complied with, followed by a political negotiation in which the support that each candidature had attracted was assessed. All three have gotten the approval of the Commission.

“We are very excited that Spain is in the forefront after the work done for many years in supercomputing in Europe, which will put us in a very favorable position to address the developments in artificial intelligence that the country needs in many areas,” he said. Pedro Duque, Minister of Science, Innovation and Acting Universities, during the press conference following today’s Council of Ministers. “It is the culmination of a long Spanish tradition of support and strong commitment to supercomputing, which began in 2004 with the creation of the National Supercomputing Center and the launch in 2007 of the Spanish Supercomputing Network.”

The president of the Generalitat, Quim Torra, has stated that the selection of Barcelona as the seat of one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe “will guarantee” that Catalonia “leads the digital and technological revolution”

What is celebrated in Sant Jordi?

Love and culture, roses and books; the two great protagonists of the Diada

Sant Jordi-19-Barcelona

Sant Jordi-19-Barcelona

Couples walk happily by the hand. They look at each other, embrace and kiss each other. The women wear a beautiful red rose and the men look at a book that they have just given away. The squares of all the cities and towns of Catalonia are filled for a day with colorful stalls in the streets. You breathe love and culture. This is Sant Jordi, the tradition that marks the arrival of the most romantic day of the year for Catalans.

Once again, the streets will be impregnated with the smell of roses and books. Hundreds of curious people will come to the main avenues to enjoy one of the days with the most tourist and local attractions. Florists will sell bouquets without stopping and the book industry will reach its peak today in the most emotional day for writers. Sant Jordi is the patron saint of Catalonia since the 15th century and, according to the popular festival, men must give a rose to women and this is a book for their partner.

The dragon and the princess

Legend has it that once in the small town of Montblanc, in the Conca de Barberà, one day an evil dragon appeared that terrified the neighbors. These, to prevent their attacks from becoming a massacre, decided that they would draw a lot among the population and give the dragon one person each day.
Early the daughter of the king was chosen and, when she was going to be devoured by the monster, a brave knight named Sant Jordi interposed between them. The hidalgo fought the dragon and killed him. From his blood came a rose bush, from which Sant Jordi took the most beautiful flower and handed it to the princess. This day commemorates the death of the Saint, which took place in the year 303.

Hence the tradition that men give a rose to their partners or friends, companions and family.

Flowers for all tastes

A decade ago creativity took over some florists to put aside the sale of conventional red roses, although these are still the best sellers. Some merchants have opted for roses made of wood, plastic or paper, and for colors such as pink, yellow or blue. With glitter, personalized spikes, original ribbons or bathed with a variety of perfumes. You can find all kinds of customizations. In fact, it is a claim that offers the possibility of writing the name of the recipient on one of the petals.

In 2017, more than six million flowers were sold and it is expected that this year the figures will be repeated.

World day of the book

Although it has nothing to do with Santo, April 23 is also celebrated on Book Day,. It began to be celebrated on October 7, 1926 in commemoration of the day of the birth of Miguel de Cervantes, although later the party was moved to April 23, the day of his death.
In 1995, UNESCO instituted that same World Book and Copyright Day. On April 23, 1981, the poet Garcilaso de la Vega died and, although in different years, on the same day, references were also made to literature such as Shakespeare or Josep Pla.

On April 23 died, among other writers, Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes

Although the Diada is celebrated throughout Catalonia, it is more multitudinous and colorful in Barcelona, especially on the Rambla. The famous promenade that connects the Plaza de Cataluña with the Port is filled with book and flower stalls from early in the morning. Soon after, waves of people gather to walk.

For booksellers and publishers, Sant Jordi is the day of the year that more books are sold. But not only is it a long-awaited occasion for them. For readers it is a unique opportunity to be very close to their favorite writers, since many authors sign their works at street level.
Last year more than 300 writers participated in the book signing. They took place in about 80 bookstores and street stalls and a variety of artists showed up. Among those of this year, Fernando Aramburu, Eduardo Mendoza or Maria Dueñas are some of those who will appear in the celebration. Sarah Lark, Megan Maxwell or Ben Brook will intervene as internationals and, Carme Riera, Rafel Nadal or Xavier Bosch will not miss the appointment, among many others.

But not everything is limited to the stops of roses and books, there are many more activities that are worthwhile in the city. Among them, the opening cry, the doors open at city council.

Barcelona Chicago route

Norwegian operates four weekly direct flights between Barcelona and Chicago this summer, its fifth transcontinental route to the United States from El Prat, according to the company. The route is organized on Friday, June 7 and operates four days a week, every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, until October 26. Altogether, Norwegian will operate five routes between Barcelona and the United States: in addition to Chicago, the four already exist in New York / Newark, Los Angeles, San Francisco / Oakland and Miami / Fort Lauderdale.

Likewise, the Nordic airline reinforces its operational operation in the summer season with the increase of frequencies to New York and Los Angeles. In this way, the Barcelona-New York happens with six weekly frequencies to do it with daily flight and the route Barcelona – Los Angeles, on the other hand, happens to five weekly frequencies, and operates every day of the week except Thursdays. “With this boost of activity, Norwegian will offer 44 weekly flights between Barcelona and the United States this summer, ten more than in the previous summer,” says Matthew Wood, company executive.
For the Chicago operation and the increase in frequencies, an aircraft room is required at the Barcelona airport. Therefore, from the month of June, a fourth Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner will be incorporated into the radio base in Barcelona. Along with the five Boeing 738-8 with its base radio account, Norwegian will have a total of nine aircraft based on El Prat, a historic maximum.

In an environment of restructuring of the company, Norwegian, which will close three bases in Spain, bets on long-haul traffic at the Barcelona airport. Since the beginning of its long-haul flights in Barcelona, in June 2017, Norwegian has transported more than 590,000 passengers between Barcelona and the United States; Of these, 407,000 were transported in 2018, 173 percent more than in the previous year.

The inauguration in Barcelona takes place just one month before the premiere of Tesla in Madrid. The brand’s first store in the capital will be located at number 3 in Serrano, a few meters from the Puerta de Alcalá. The chosen venue has 275 square meters and for years it housed a store of the Divatto sofa chain. His last tenant was the whiskey brand Haig, which opened an ephemeral store (pop up) until 2016.With the stores of Roselló and Serrano, the American brand would have three permanent points of sale, since last September it inaugurated in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat a technical service center for vehicle repair, where you can also buy the Model S and X.

The next technical center will open in Madrid to supply customers and users in the downtown area. Tesla sells its vehicles directly, with its own staff and without intermediaries (dealers) as general brands do. The opening of its first stores on the street takes place months after its first commercial experience in Spain, which began with an ephemeral store in the port of Barcelona. Also, the brand created by Elon Musk closed an agreement with El Corte Inglés to sell its exclusive cars in some of the group’s department stores. The first Tesla space in an English Court opened in June in its center in Puerto Banús, which remained open during the summer. At the end of August, this alliance was extended to several centers in Madrid (now has a temporary space in the center commercial of Pozuelo de Alarcón) and to Portugal. Specifically, on September 1 Tesla opened a so-called ephemeral store in El Corte Inglés in Lisbon, which will be operational for six months. Superchargers On the other hand Tesla continues to expand its network of superchargers in Spain (superchargers). Charlotte Salomon in Pedralbes

Posted by chauffeurbarcelona on Jan 3, PM
Posted in: Sin categoría. Tagged: Barcelona, Charlotte Salomon, monastery of Santa Maria, pedralbes, salomon. Leave a comment

The look of the girl who poses with her father, attentive, vivacious, is maintained in later images of youth. The girl is Charlotte Salomon (Berlin, 1917-Auschwitz, 1943), and her father, the renowned surgeon and researcher Albert Salomon. He is part of a family of the upper middle class in Berlin, who live in the elegant Charlottenburg and, at the time when that photo was taken, he only had one father. Charlotte lost her mother when she was nine years old.

But life goes on and Albert meets a beautiful woman, the lyrical singer Paulina Lindberg, who will give her the opportunity of a long marriage. And that’s how you see both older people in the sixties, in an interview. At that moment, when Paulina arrives at the house, it seems that it is transmitted to her, to the children and adolescents, while it is transmitted to Charlotte. The horror. That Weimar Republic that goes from startle to startle, economic, political and moral. In 1933, when Charlotte is sixteen years old, Adolf Hitler is named chancellor.
But life and art are immense, also for Jews like them. There is a prominent place in the place, the theater, the music and the town. At the National School of Fine Arts Charlotte is a prominent student; The only Jewish woman admitted there. In Charlotte’s house, in addition to Paulina, reigns a capital figure: the singing professor Alfred Wolfsohn, former soldier of the First World War and who, through his experience in the future of post-traumatic stress, would help emerge numerous artists. His techniques are therapeutic.

There are many prominent who got, on the part of the Nazi authorities, which have been a space of art, theater, music for and for their people.

This work that we see in the monastery of Pedralbes, and that arrives at the Jewish Museum of Amsterdam, is a careful edition of more than two hundred paintings. The original work consists of more than a thousand years and was painted by Charlotte in her confinement of almost two years, between 1940 and 1942. The school of Fine Arts and the city of Berlin, and was a refugee (dubious refuge, in truth) in a small town on the Cote d’Azur, in the south of France. Paulina will be called Paulinka, Alfred will be Amadeus, and she will be called Charlotte Kann. And so the burden of his real life and his desires-Freud had died two years ago-is made of his unconscious, his fantasy and his truth.

There was something, and someone, who unleashed this work. In the photographs, a venerable old man with a white beard. In these paintings, the grandfather is the figure that will end up realizing us. In exile in France, Charlotte has just seen her grandmother throwing herself out the window. And that’s when the man, then, aims and shoots: all the women in the family committed suicide, all of them, also their mother. And you, you have just dictated it, you will have to continue with the tradition. Do it.
But Charlotte, in the case of the grandmother, had abused her daughters and, also, of her – she did not listen to him. Instead, she locked herself to go to light and joy in the shade with an elemental palette that she explored beyond the possible. She was choreographer, record keeper and author of her soundtrack. Split your scenes in storyboard mode. It tells us, when we see a painting, that it is the music that accompanies it. He was far from his most beloved ones-his stepmother, his father-whom he would never see again. Out there the Nazis were approaching.

The day that the work ended, as well as the account. David Foenkinos in Charlotte (“The history of the doctor.” This is my whole life).

Here it is: familiar scenes are charming, with humor too. The elegant table presided by the severe grandparents, when it was published in the future and in the future father of Charlotte, can also be read in other words, such as the delicate, the dreamer and the sad. Sometimes one thinks of Marc Chagall, later on of Modigliani figures.

The love story that is told here, with Amadeus, was not true. But how to refute the love that Charlotte feels for him, or the infinite story of the singer Paulinka. The woman – in the middle of the series can verse – facing the Nazi authorities to free her husband. In the interview of the sixties, Paulina admits that she feels fully recognized in the work of Charlotte.

The brushstroke becomes extreme, sometimes desperate. “I’m sick of this life, I’m sick of this time,” exclaimed Charlotte. But at last he triumphs in his escape from the insane. She fell in love, became pregnant at twenty-six and, no doubt, the compass of this training novel (which is also, and decisive), has the master Amadeus: “I hope you never forget that I believe in you.”

Charlotte, if they had let her live, if she had not been deported to Auschwitz in 1943, she would not have forgotten.

Almost 300 stands will remain open to the public until December 23
Fira de Santa Llúcia-2018

Fira de Santa Llúcia-2018

La Fira de Santa Llúcia is much more than a fair or a point of sale for purely Christmas items, for many people in Barcelona it is the beginning of the Christmas holidays. And so it has been happening since time immemorial, there are those who already have 232 editions, since 1786. The fact is that this appointment has already become a tradition to celebrate these days: the purchase of ornaments, figures for the Nativity scene, tiós , Christmas trees, zambombas or ornaments in general.

But it is not only Barcelona’s neighbors who enjoy this particular market, but thousands of tourists who come to the vicinity of the Cathedral to get into the Catalan Christmas tradition, where they discover two singular characters: the tió and, the star of In recent years, the caganer. The latter a figure “is a real success among the outsiders who buy it as if it were a souvenir”, recognizes one of the merchants who sells figures for the nativity scene. And it is that this charming character of the Catalan crib has conquered millions of people around the world interpreting all kinds of public personalities, the political, sports and social world.

The 285 stands that form this year the Fira de Santa Llúcia will remain open until next December 23. The working days from 11 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. and holidays and vigils from 10 a.m. to 9.30 p.m.

Velazquez in Barcelona

Velázquez talks with his contemporaries of the Golden Age at CaixaForum

Velazquez Caixa Forum-2018

Velazquez Caixa Forum-2018

The CaixaForum opens the first great exhibition on Velázquez on Friday, which can be seen in Barcelona. The baroque collection of the Museo del Prado in Madrid nourishes the exhibition, which proposes a dialogue between seven masterpieces by the Sevillan painter and fifty canvases by other great artists of his time, among which Rubens, Ribera, El Greco, Zurbarán, Giordano or Van Dyck. The works of Velázquez offer a broad vision of the stylistic and thematic palette of the painter and propose a game of comparisons and correlations with some of the Spanish and international painters with whom they were related or whose production was up to date. The exhibition, which coexists with the CaixaForum with another large exhibition dedicated to Toulouse Lautrec, can be visited until March 3, 2019.

Titià, El Greco, Ribera, Antonio Moro, Rubens, Murillo, Giordano, Brueghel, Guido Reni, Van Dyck, Zurbarán, Claudio de Lorena and Stanzione are the constellation of artists whose work accompanies seven great paintings by Velázquez (Seville, 1599 – Madrid, 1660) at the exhibition ‘Velázquez and the Golden Age’ at CaixaForum. The seven masterpieces of the Sevillan painter are ‘Felipe IV’, ‘Juan Martínez Montañés’,’ Isop ‘,’ Adoration of the Three Kings’, ‘Bufó con libros’,’ Prince Baltasar Carlos on horseback ‘and’ Mart’.Les Pieces chosen by commissioner Javier Portús Pérez (head of preservation of Spanish painting of the Prado Museum) seek to give “a description as wide as possible of the author,” according to ACN. “The intention is that with these seven works we understand who was Velázquez, the eagerness of originality, the narrative singularity and the extraordinary technical virtues that make it one of the peaks of painting,” says the curator. “He was one of the most versatile Spanish artists and he cultivated a variety of topics, which he wanted to reflect on the exhibition.” The representation of knowledge, religion, reflection on art, the Court, mythology and landscape are the thematic areas proposed by the exhibition to show this thematic fan of Velázquez. For each subject, a canvas by Velázquez. And around it, works by other Spanish and international artists that allow us to compare their work with what other Spanish and European painters of the Golden Age have done, as well as the European, “which place Velázquez to the visitor in another place accurate “, says Portús. “From a very young age, Velázquez sought singularity with a desire to distinguish himself, from his first works in Seville: still lifes that do not resemble anything known until then.” Later on, he would go to work at the service of the Royal Court, “a competitive medium and where to become singular”, and from where he had access to production that was made at European level. The courts of the various European states did this function of artistic promotion and contributed to the observation, comparison and influence between the various creators of the moment. In this sense, the exhibition’s curator admits that while we are accustomed to writing the history of painting in terms of national schools (the “Golden Age” Spanish), “reality was not always so compartmentalized, because painting is a language that knows no borders “. “The game of stimuli and influences was extraordinarily varied, and one of the things that this exhibition shows is to what extent at that time painting was an international language that knew no borders,” Portús concludes. ‘Velázquez y el Siglo de Oro’ is the third exhibition organized jointly between CaixaForum and the Prado Museum, after ‘Goya. Lights and Shadows ‘, and’ The captivating beauty. Treasures of the Prado Museum ‘. In this case, the new exhibition in Barcelona adds to the acts of celebration of the bicentennial of the Madrid art gallery.

Ferrari Land launches five children’s attractions and “energize” PortAventura World

Ferrari Land Tarragona

Ferrari Land Tarragona

The leisure complex PortAventura World expects to exceed five million visitors this year thanks to the “leverage of dynamism” that has led to the theme park Ferrari Land, which on Tuesday has premiered five attractions for children and from March 23 to 30 April has grown by 60% year-on-year in visits and 27% in hotel occupancy.

This has been explained by the general director of PortAventura World, Fernando Aldecoa, in an informative breakfast held in the park, in which he has commented the perspectives for this season and next year, and has assured that the independence process has not caused any impact on the number of visitors.

“Ferrari Land has had an evolution and impact throughout the spring, is a lever of dynamism that makes PortAventura position as a unique destination in Europe,” said Aldecoa, and has attributed the good results of this start of the season to the bet on Ferrari Land, which has had an investment of five million euros for new attractions.

With the opening of this Tuesday, the park dedicated to the Italian team already has a third of its offer aimed at children, and strengthens its commitment to the family audience, which accounts for 80% of customers.

The new attractions are Junior Red Force, a children’s version of the Red Force attraction; Kids Tower, a nine meter free fall tower; Champions Race, which simulates the driving of a Ferrari, and Crazy Pistons, an attraction that simulates the movement of the pistons of an engine.

A POSITIVE YEAR

Aldecoa has made a good assessment of the beginning of this 2018 and has ensured that PortAventura has lived the best Easter Week located in the month of March in the history of the park.

A trend that adds to the good results experienced since October last year, when the leisure complex recorded the best Halloween and Christmas campaigns, and that has resulted in a 9% increase in Spanish visitors.

The general director has assured that these figures show that the independence process has not had any impact: “PortAventura World is an international destination that is not affected by the tensions between Catalonia and Spain.”

Aldecoa has announced that this year will commemorate the 20th anniversary of ‘Woody’, the mascot of the park, and the characters of Tadeo Jones will arrive, while the shows of ‘Cirque du Soleil’ will not be scheduled, although they maintain the agreement.

NOVELTIES IN 2019

The leisure complex plans to invest 25 million in the construction of a theme hotel in 2019 aimed at a family audience that will be located in the area ‘Far West’ and will be added to the five hotels that has the spring.

It is also planned to build a new attraction in the theme park of Sésamo Aventura that will consist of the first ‘dark ride’ of the leisure complex and will cost about 15 million euros.

Both facilities will have a total investment of 40 million and are aimed at PortAventura World “continue to grow to enrich the product of the theme parks with new attractions,” and thus become the best tourism spring in southern Europe.

Castles of Catalonia

Posted by chauffeurbarcelona on Aug 11, AM

Catalonia is a land of castles. In fact, one of the many theories on the etymological origin of our country is that the word derives from ‘land of castles’, which would have evolved from the term ‘castlà’, from the French ‘chastelain’ and ‘châtelain’, which would serve to call the governor of a castle. Certain or not, this theory, which is unquestionable, is that Catalonia has a great medieval heritage. The 600 fortresses, towers and strong houses scattered throughout the different points of the Catalan geography are proof.
