Blue Wave in the Port Vell, has won the first prize in the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards 2016
At the edge of the water, symbolizing a big blue wave – as its name indicates, Blue Wawe – reflecting on their ceramics the Mediterranean Sea Port Vell in Barcelona, is the bar of world’s most beautiful design.
Or at least they considered the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards, something like the ‘Oscars’ design restoration, just awarding its first prize to this cocktail bar located at number 1 Moll de la Barceloneta in the complex OneOcean Club.
Prize shared with the Creative Team, the architectural firm responsible for this work, which has also signed the design of other dining spaces such as the Pakta and Tickets Albert Adrià restaurants, the Enjoy the “exbullinianos” Mateu Casañas, Oriol Castro and Eduard Xatruch; or the latest proposal of the Iglesias brothers, the restaurant Bellavista del Jardín del Norte.
“For the Blue Wave we try to simulate the sensation of being inside a big wave, because it is a very small space, on the sea, facing west, which suggests that, being a big wave,” says Natali Canas del Pozo, one of the three architects Creative Team.
Together with his colleagues, Oliver Franz Schmidt and Lucas Echeveste Lacy (also architects), he admits he never work without a concept of totality, “we do not decorate anything, but we make up a space”.
Hence the Blue Wave has been designed with seven different shades of blue, Mediterranean ceramic shell-shaped elements that suggest water droplets and many other reflective materials that work very well because “space is very bright both day at night”.
It is not the first time they receive a prize for their work. In fact, the list is rather long. In 2015, FX International Design Awards honored them by design Disfrutar. A restaurant, which according Canas, responds much to the personality of their chefs.
“They were seeking the essence of the Mediterranean and humility, without losing sight of the origins of Compartir in Cadaques, hence we chose to create a very pure white space, which I think fits well with dishes of colors and textures,” he explains.
One of his last works, and perhaps one of the most ambitious, was to sign the design of the restaurant Bella Vista del Jardín del Norte. “Many people associate the space with the club (soccer team) because Messi are involved in this project, but actually what we wanted was to recreate a village anywhere in the world.”
For them, each new work is a challenge, “we are trying to fit with the idea of our customers”, and now have joined a new one: after the food and beverage outlets have been launched to participate in the design of a hotel in Madrid.
