Amazon installs an artificial intelligence research center in Barcelona
Amazon will open a new research center in Barcelona in the first half of 2018 that provides for the hiring of more than 100 scientists and software engineers in the coming years. The new Amazon center, located in the 22 @ of the Catalan capital, will be dedicated to research in machine learning, a scientific branch of artificial intelligence, which requires scientific profiles such as mathematics or physicists, according to the US company. The new facility will be located in the technological district of Barcelona, in the same building on Tanger Street that occupies the Amazon Support Seller Hub, which will start operating at the beginning of next year.
In recent months, Amazon has intensified its commitment to artificial intelligence and its possible applications in the world of ecommerce. Amazon’s international auto-learning team focuses its efforts on automatically extracting patterns from the huge databases they get from their transactions and allow them to make high-precision predictions. Amazon’s strategy is to use automatic learning in areas such as customer demand forecasting, product information translation and automatic speech recognition.
“Barcelona is the ideal location for our new research and development center. The extensive network of universities with which it counts and the quality of life makes it a very interesting destination for international talent, “says François Nuyts, vice president and general manager of Amazon in Spain and Italy. The selection process is already underway through the website and can be extended for the next three years, since the profiles – scientists and engineers – are very demanding.
The ecommerce giant thus adds a new facility in Barcelona, where it announced last March its intention to create 500 new jobs by 2019 with the opening of its Seller Support Hub, , a multilingual team that will support small businesses that sell their products in the Amazon Marketplace from France, Italy and Spain. The company is also building a new logistics center in El Prat de Llobregat (Barcelona), with an area of 60,000 square meters, which is expected to start operating before the end of this year, which will generate another 1,500 jobs more to 2019. To this is added another logistics center in Martorelles (Barcelona).
The new research and development center in Barcelona adds to the investments already made by Amazon in Spain last year. The company will end 2017 with a workforce of 1,600 permanent employees, spread among its corporate offices, and its increasingly extensive logistics network, which already includes its two logistics centers in San Fernando de Henares (Madrid) and Castellbisbal (Barcelona) ), as well as two other urban distribution centers dedicated exclusively to Prime Now (Amazon’s ultra-fast delivery service).
