Norwegian opens the route from Barcelona to Chicago
Norwegian operates four weekly direct flights between Barcelona and Chicago this summer, its fifth transcontinental route to the United States from El Prat, according to the company. The route is organized on Friday, June 7 and operates four days a week, every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, until October 26. Altogether, Norwegian will operate five routes between Barcelona and the United States: in addition to Chicago, the four already exist in New York / Newark, Los Angeles, San Francisco / Oakland and Miami / Fort Lauderdale.
Likewise, the Nordic airline reinforces its operational operation in the summer season with the increase of frequencies to New York and Los Angeles. In this way, the Barcelona-New York happens with six weekly frequencies to do it with daily flight and the route Barcelona – Los Angeles, on the other hand, happens to five weekly frequencies, and operates every day of the week except Thursdays. “With this boost of activity, Norwegian will offer 44 weekly flights between Barcelona and the United States this summer, ten more than in the previous summer,” says Matthew Wood, company executive.
For the Chicago operation and the increase in frequencies, an aircraft room is required at the Barcelona airport. Therefore, from the month of June, a fourth Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner will be incorporated into the radio base in Barcelona. Along with the five Boeing 738-8 with its base radio account, Norwegian will have a total of nine aircraft based on El Prat, a historic maximum.
In an environment of restructuring of the company, Norwegian, which will close three bases in Spain, bets on long-haul traffic at the Barcelona airport. Since the beginning of its long-haul flights in Barcelona, in June 2017, Norwegian has transported more than 590,000 passengers between Barcelona and the United States; Of these, 407,000 were transported in 2018, 173 percent more than in the previous year.
