The premiere of an extensive retrospective at the MoMA in New York rescues the trace of the artist in Barcelona

The Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA) pays tribute this October with a colorful retrospective. The Palau de la Generalitat looks in a room in your name with frescos that decorated the Saló Sant Jordi in1916 at the request of Prat de la Riba. Frequenting the “Quatre Gats’ and worked with Antoni Gaudí-Design windows to the Holy Family, Eugeni d’Ors, Joan Miró, Ramon Casas … And, despite everything, the imprint of Joaquín Torres García (1875-1949) in Barcelona remains totally forgotten.

More than a game

Manufacturing of Sarria operated during the first years 20. Torres García designing parts and its partner, the artisan Rambla Francesc Teixidor, the materialized. Rambla had his workshop in Hort de la Vila and was a renowned cabinetmaker in the then independent town of Sarria, which also was commissioned to carve the stalls of the Plenary Hall of the Town Hall, now the headquarters of the district. The company Aladdin New York Toys rights bought them toys, which manufactured and sold in the United States as well as in Europe. However, the two partners ended up breaking the Barcelona project and was buried.
A rising value
Torres Garcia was an itinerant artist -he lived in Uruguay, Spain, USA, France, Italy … -, one of the first creators globalized, but lived in Catalunya for much of his creative life. Indeed, the extensive retrospective at MoMA -¡190 parts – is not the only exhibition of the author, one of the most prominent representatives of the pictorial vanguards in the Southern Cone. He also starred in recent samples in Spain: this July at the Museum of Fine Arts of Murcia (Mubam) until this Wednesday at the Dalmau Gallery in Barcelona, which has a close relationship with the artist’s family since the 70s also his pieces have been seen at the Museu Picasso de Barcelona (2014) and the Reina Sofia in Madrid (2013). The MNAC gave him a temporary four months in 2011 and for a year starred in a room of the museum, thanks to the timely transfer of 14 works by their grandchildren.
The current MoMA exhibition will travel to Madrid on May 19th to September 11th, 2016 and Malaga of October 10th, 2016 to February 5th 2017, but is not intended calling at any Catalan population.
