The social club for creative disembarks in Barcelona
Berlin, London, Miami … and now, Barcelona. Soho House, the exclusive social club for creative professionals, created 21 years ago by Nick Jones in London and now present in 18 cities around the world, has just opened its doors in Barcelona.
It is his first seat in Spain, in the Gothic Quarter, in a nineteenth century building in the Plaza del Duque de Medinaceli, opposite the Port Vell of Barcelona; and for its creation, it has been allocated around 60 million euros.
Straddling the concept of luxury hotel – possibly reach Category 5 stars – combined with social areas where only members and their guests have free access to enjoy facilities like club, pool, spa, gym, cinema and restaurants; Soho House aims to be the opposite of the classic gentry club: The indispensable requirement to access it is to have a creative profession.
Its members belong to industries like film, the media, music or art; and to be selected, not only to test the profession but also be recommended by at least two other members.
Once inside, there are two unbreakable rules: entry is allowed partners suit and tie or use mobile phones to take pictures.
The price to pay? 1,500 per year for those over 27 years and half for the younger ones. That only in Barcelona. Also enjoy the facilities of the rest of the world Soho House is priced at 1,800 euros per year. But even with these prices scandal currently over 60,000 people belong to this private club worldwide.
The new headquarters of Barcelona has 57 rooms, which can obviously only book partners, and its cost is around 320 euros and 350 euros per night. One of them is a suite, with separate living room, and all overlook the sea, the city or the Duque de Medinaceli square.
The design of the new building was designed by Nick Jones, executive director of design company, Vicky Charles, and European design director James Waterworth. They were inspired by a classic design with influences of Catalan Gothic architecture and double height vaulted ceilings, because the desire for Jones is that each city in which disembarks.
The rooms boast modern at the same rustic feel, with warm, Mediterranean colors and patterned fabrics with traditional Spanish designs. And the spa, open to the general public, which opens Wednesday with the gym, is inspired by a Barcelona pharmacy 80s and has a large vault.
The furniture consists of an amalgam of European mid-century pieces, antiques bought in local Changuito or Mercantic and custom designs by the team of Soho House.
November reach its restaurant, Cecconi’s, an Italian restaurant that will open its doors on the ground floor and will be open to the general public. Like the film, although it will be only for members, will have a programming or independent arthouse films and even some sneak previews.
Music events and often tend to be borne by the members themselves (and has been acting to Craig Richards at the headquarters of Shoderitch, for example). Everything will be quoted on the roof of the hotel, with pool, hammocks and a rest area or in the club.
The ex Bulli serve already the fifth summer menu at his restaurant
In case anyone had forgotten, just a month ago some nostalgic remembered that half a decade has passed since El Bulli closed its doors as a restaurant.
Reminisced that day in late July in which he said goodbye with a memorable dinner (under various items in the kitchen, the best chefs in the world that once had formed orders Adrià and missed Juli Soler, who died last summer).
Sharing, the project three exbullis
There are also back five years to return to the beginning of Compartir, the restaurant opened in Cadaqués, in a house with more than three centuries old owned by gourmet Pere Vehí (one of the most regular customers of El Bulli). It was the first experience as entrepreneurs who were three key pieces in Cala Montjoi: the former heads of cuisine El Bulli Oriol Castro, Eduard Xatruch and Mateu Casañas.
They announced in June 2012 with a small mouth that wanted to start his own career by opening a casual dining establishment without more aspirations than serving dishes to share, with seasonal ingredients and simplicity which would bring his personal touch.
Serving dishes to share
And then they remembered that this was not, by far, claims to be another Bulli, which does not tire of repeating in the fall of 2014 when they opened in Barcelona the Disfrutar. If the latter was his great landing, with a big bet creative cuisine (leading a team of 45 people), which has earned them recognition in bulk from that lit the stove, the Compartir remains true to those origins of a simple proposal and attractive to spend a good time with family or friends in one of the most beautiful places on the Costa Barava.
They themselves believe just going for his fifth summer menu. Recognizes Mateu Casañas, who these days is at the front of the house while his friends are enjoying butt in. “We are more than happy because we fill every day and in all services. And it is a pleasure to be making improvements every season. Each is a big step because we started with very little resources, with only four people and now we are twelve template. For these value as a great luxury to compare a new fridge or make any improvement. ”
Casañas, like their colleagues, keep the speech when they started. “They keep asking ourselves if our kitchen is bulliniana and we continue to respond to El Bulli ourselves, because it has been important part of our lives and because there grew up as cooks and as people.”
If you get to the cove Montjoi supposed to diners who enjoyed the signature restaurant, get to a secluded place, they are aware that a lunch or dinner at the Compartir also requires a break of a day to enjoy a proposal not disappoint.
Beautiful, light and succulent starters, from artichokes confit salad with almond sorbet and vanilla oil, nuts, raisins and hazelnuts; tomatoes with basil different textures; sardines marinated with beet; oysters with cinnamon foam; tuna cannelloni …
Delicate dishes in which each piece fits and enhances what goes with it; pickled mackerel or anchovies with honey fir; suquet monkfish or pork tenderloin with bacon. Some are kept from the beginning, such as hazelnut coulant with apricot sorbet, which is already a classic.
Others, have been readjusting and have evolved as themselves. They know that some houses work great thanks to the complicity between brothers and are accustomed to ask them if not more complicated understood among friends.
They family feel and are organized smoothly, “Because we know very well and each of us is engaged in a more prominent way to what you do best.” Of all the years of El Bulli, explains Casañas (Oriol entered the 96, he Xatruch in 97 and in 99) are left with the best teaching: “We learned to create those who fancied. To be free. ”

Andew Ritchie is the Steve Jobs of the devotees of the Brompton bicycles. What devotees is timely because this profession ex gardener decided the name of the bike I had in mind almost at random. That was in the late 70s From the window of the London office where he worked on the design of his invention, which Ritchie saw was the Brompton Oratory, which is popularly known as the English Catholic Church of the Immaculate Sacred Heart of Mary. It must be admitted that this second name, the officer would have had less commercial stuck if it comes pedaling. Obviously, Ritchie did not invent the folding bike, because that is essentially a Brompton, but an ingenious design and, above all, a process of handcrafting that, allegedly, ensures a lifespan of 40 years of daily use. Total, that if someone believes the ‘street fighter’ between pedestrians and cyclists is at its peak, to prepare for the next round.
Let’s recap. The number of subscribers to the Bicing has fallen gradually since the 2009 public service that planted the flag on their particular Everest. That year there were 190,000 users, or at least, that was the number of issued ID cards. The latest official figure is much lower subscribers, 96,452 this month of April. The use of bicycles as a means of transport in the city, however, grows. Barcelona round a daily average of 140,000 trips by bike. In three years this share has grown 15%. The natural conclusion is to think that the Bicing has been a rite of passage for many locals, the seed of a later flowering, but discomfort (the poor state sometimes available units, the difficulty of finding one or, worse, the inability to park it) have meant that many users prefer to have your own bike.
Although it probably has happened (sorry, but there are no official statistics on the park two wheels without engine of the city) that conclusion overlooked a very important detail such, the Brompton, the ‘iphone’ bicycles effect.
Barcelona opens today in the eleventh shop monographic world of this iconic brand. It is also the world’s largest. Things that happen in Barcelona, is not it a great surface but exhibits permanently 120 units of this folding bike, absolutely artisan, an unusual today ‘made in England’ (remember, Rolls Royce is already owned by the German BMW and Jaguar, Indian Tata), which only 50 units a day patiently assembled by hand. Be the bike James Bond if I had to and pursue the villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld in a new adventure.
The opening of a shop exclusively Brompton may seem input, a minor event, worthy of a simple journalistic press release, but the figures reveal the classic movement of magma that precedes a volcanic eruption. Barcelona is, according to Oscar Alcaraz, head of the shop, world city with the highest per capita Bromptons. It is said soon. According to the company, there is a 20,000 units in Barcelona this bike that does not stand out precisely because of its economical price. Rounding three purples bills, glups!
In the section page policy is often recounts how the separatists try to “broaden the social base of the ‘proces'”. It seems that the difficulties are greater than expected. In Barcelona, the social base of everyday bicycle users has expanded to unimagined group a few years ago, that nebulous segment of what are considered liberal professionals that they are or not, could easily be confused aesthetically with them. They discovered first with the Bicing that in a city where cars travel at 12 kilometers per hour on average, pedal, in depending on which routes, 20 kilometers per hour are reached. Then simply they decided to have your own bike, but the big plug for “Amsterdamisation” of Barcelona have always been theft. In the Dutch city, the remedy against theft, which also exist, has been opting for bicycles unappetizing for thieves. The Brompton and are scarce in Amsterdam. In Barcelona, the first bicycles to be used as a daily means of transport were mountain bikes, some 20 years ago, totally inappropriate and expensive. With them was born fear, he justified the theft.
Local puzzle solution have been heavy padlocks and parallel, folding bicycles, the use of which increases in arithmetic progression. According Alcaraz (which, of course, sweeps for home), ‘culture Brompton’ has made the leap and is no longer the only bicycle professionals. His prognosis is that polemics margin kilometers of bike lanes in the city and on the pulse with pedestrians, the use of bicycles as a means of daily transport will only grow in the coming years, especially since the next coming revolution are electric bikes. In Germany they have already sold some 500,000. In France, 200,000. In Spain are testimonials. In 2017, in a project that just details are known, the market launch of electric Brompton folding planned. It will be the ‘street fighter two’.
