Tech City cluster drives a large area of activity that should be operational in February

Barcelona Tech City
Barcelona years boiling in digital entrepreneurship issues. But London and Berlin as European leaders in technology venture capital, entrepreneurs themselves were the first and second generation of digital businesses created in Barcelona who saw the need to join forces to gain visibility and international importance. Thus was born in 2012 Ecommerce & Tech Barcelona, a cluster renamed Barcelona Tech City, which is now about to get what will be his first major milestone: a corporate headquarters that will be both a great campus where they will live up to half hundred companies, an activity center, coworking space and meeting point for national and international actors when they are in town. A likeness of the Factory of Berlin, the Google Campus in London or Boston CIC. A place where a young entrepreneur to be in the bar with a colleague to compare ideas, or match the elevator with a renowned innovator or senior investor. A place in which these contacts happen and be fruitful and become an international reference.
The idea of Bcn Tech City is that this “home of entrepreneurs” Barcelona will be operational before the celebration of the upcoming Mobile World Congress (late February 2016). And if anything goes wrong (even the last remaining sign contracts) will be located in Palau de Mar. It is a landmark building, built in 1881 as a port warehouse, and in recent years, until 2012, had housed the Department Social Welfare. There are the Museu d’Historia de Catalunya and several dining options. And some technology companies: Holaluz, Tiendeo, letgo and PGI-BIS Engineering Structures.
Palau de Mar has 10,000 m2, of which 7,500 would manage Tech City. The building is owned by the Port of Barcelona, which in its board last September agreed to extend five years, until 2024, granting the company Portico Mar, who was authorized “to reform of the building to implant companies in the field digital and technology “, according to the Port.
Sources close to the cluster recognize that the project for a new headquarters began a year and a half, and in finding alternative location have been studied as a building in Poblenou, or Casc Antic, but the Palau de Mar It is the preferred option. In this bet, the Bcn Tech City has the support of institutions, mainly the Generalitat (Accio), the City Council (through Barcelona Activa) and the Port.
The “house of entrepreneurs” is intended as a complementary figure to existing initiatives to promote entrepreneurship, as Barcelona Activa, or incubators or accelerators. In fact, close sources said that probably some of the big city such as accelerators or Conector- SeedRocket could be transferred to Palau de Mar. “The need for this large space exists, and is a model that works well in other cities” recognize. While in Barcelona Activa, for example, companies can be from birth to age three, the Palau de Mar will host companies that already have some traction, and the rotation should be the result of evolutions own businesses.
BCN Tech City, chaired Miguel Vicente (founder of Letsbonus, Antai, Wallapop) and directs Miquel Martí, is a nonprofit association that represents most of the digital and technological ecosystem: entrepreneurs, investors, corporations or institutions. In 2014 the sector in Barcelona billed 6,000 million euros, three times in 2012, and these companies employ about 10,000 people.
