Easyjet opens in Barcelona the base which closed in Madrid in 2012
The airline EasyJet has opened its base in Barcelona, the only one in Spain and number 28 in Europe, which will have three aircraft, for which it has hired 120 new workers and that it hopes to grow this year by 7% in passenger numbers at El Prat, to 3.1 million.
The CEO of Easyjet in Spain, Javier Gándara, noted the interest of the company to grow in El Prat and its commitment to consolidating Catalunya connection with Europe through the Barcelona airport to “keep bringing tourists” and connect the world Catalan business with the rest of Europe.
New connections
The opening of the base of El Prat, which, so far, has three Airbus 320 aircraft, will open two new connections this summer, Bordeaux and Naples, increasing frequencies and enhanced connectivity of cities like Geneva or Basel, to facilitate the work business passengers.
In this regard, he explained that have agreements with agencies to continue enhanced corporate business tourism trips, which the company accounts for 20% of all travelers.
Gandara recalled that Barcelona was, along with Amsterdam, the first European airport to EasyJet flew out of the UK in 1996.
2.8 million passengers
Currently, the airline flies to Barcelona from 16 European airports, carrying over 2.8 million passengers each year and, since it operates in the city, easyJet has transported 32 million passengers, equivalent to 300 times fill the Camp Nou.
On the possibility of opening new bases in Spain, such as Madrid, Gandara said that for this year were Barcelona and Venice and new ones are being planned worldwide.
Rule out the long distance
Asked about the interest of the airline to make long-haul flights, Gándara has insisted that the company “that’s a distraction,” and, with a market share of 8%, still have a lot of development to be done in the short and medium haul, “which is what we do well.”
The opening ceremony has also been chaired by the director of the Network of Aena Aeropuertos, Fernando Echegaray, and the director of Barcelona airport, Sonia Corrochano, and has received the traditional water cannon to welcome one of the A320 based in El Prat, and the symbolic cutting of the ribbon to inaugurate the base.
