Visitors to the Sagrada Familia are just before crossing the door of the Passion with a numerological riddle, one of the many secrets hidden in the most unlikely corners of Barcelona. To the left of the entrance a square formed by 16 cells can be observed. Each contains a number. If one were entertained, verify that the sum of the horizontal rows is 33. Also added when vertical. And the diagonals. And the four central squares and corners. Almost any combination totaling 33. Why?
The puzzle is based on a cryptogram known as magic square. There are many works of art scattered around the world. Not always have 16 boxes and do not always add up to 33. Some are larger and smaller, but always adding the same number. No longer a mathematical game resulting from the application of a formula. But then inevitably Antoni Gaudí stories, urban legends and mysteries that allegedly relate to secret societies, in the case of the Sagrada Família, arise. And among them, which is always the talk of the Masons. And always someone relates the magic square with 33 degrees of Freemasonry Mason and a past course of Gaudí.
Great script for a novel or film, but the explanation is, as usual, much simpler. First, the magic square of the Sagrada Família was not the work of Gaudí, Josep Maria Subirachs but, creator of the sculpture of the Passion Facade. He invented the magic square and in no time he came inspired by any Masonic symbol. Just 33 is just the age when Jesus Christ died on the cross.
