Barcelona moves up to third place worldwide meeting tourism

Barcelona has been ranked third international city with the highest number of tourism of meetings organized in 2015, behind Berlin and Paris, according to the ranking prepared by the Association of Congresses and Conventions (ICCA).

As it reported by Barcelona Tourism, the city has established itself as a destination for meetings to be organized a total of 180 meetings in 2015, which has allowed him to climb two positions and move from fifth place to third.

Business tourism represents for Barcelona a direct economic impact of around 1,500 million euros annually and indirect, because it affects a wide range of companies from different sectors, such as food, transportation and car rental.

One of the highlights of the conference tourism is its contribution to the seasonal nature of the phenomenon, and conferences and fairs such as the Mobile World Congress and Alimentaria are examples of the attraction of the city in low season.

The gallery owner Ramon have documented activity since 1911 in Reus, and in the 20s the great-grandfather moved to Sitges. The current business grandfather started it in 1942 in Barcelona, and in 1989 expanded to father Artur Ramon gallery. “Fifteen years ago we started thinking about internationalization, it means to be in the best fairs: TEFAF Maastricht and the Paris Motor Show.” To take this step, Ramon explains, “we were coming generalist tradition, and we specialize in drawings.”

In this model change, Artur Ramon Art is inspired by what already works in London or New York, where there are “art management centers which also offer added value study, assessment or consultancy. We are not only dedicated to buy and sell standard product: there is a cultural, patrimonial background. The company, headed by Artur Ramon and his sons Artur and Mònica, employs seven people. Currently, drawing and painting and represent 80% of the business, which in the last year was about
2 million euros. 70% of sales are made to international customers, mainly collectors or museums ( “this year we sold two drawings at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Fine Arts, Boston”).

His forecast is that “in four years we could double the volume of sales, not the number of operations”; currently, about 50 transactions performed
per year.
