Asiana Airlines will connect Barcelona and Seoul four times a week
Singapore Airlines to operate two weekly flights between Barcelona and Singapore without stopping in Milan
Singapore Airlines will operate two weekly flights without technical stop in Milan on the Barcelona-Singapore route, the company said in a statement Tuesday.
The airline will offer these two non-stop flights with the new Airbus A350-900 on Friday and Monday from Barcelona to Singapore and Thursdays and Sundays from Singapore to Barcelona, while it will continue to operate three flights to Singapore via Milan on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays , Offering a total of five flights a week connecting Barcelona with the hub of the airline in Singapore.
The technical stop in Milan for the five weekly flights of the Barcelona-Milan route was introduced in October last year, and the Singapore Airlines general manager in Spain and Portugal, Deryk Liew, has stated that the recent arrival of the A350 at the airport Barcelona offers an “operational efficiency that allows a greater deployment of resources”.
On April 3, the company celebrated the official arrival of the Airbus A350-900 at El Prat Airport, the first of these characteristics to operate a regular route to and from Barcelona.
The new A350 fleet accommodates 253 passengers in three classes: 42 Business class seats, 24 in the new Premium Economy class and 187 tourist class seats.
The airline has highlighted that this aircraft is a “key element” of the growth and renewal strategy of the Singapore Airlines fleet, as it provides the company with the opportunity to open new routes, offering more travel options to customers
The Barcelona airport leaves a record 2016 and sets a course in the growth of intercontinental flights, the most wanted
With more than 44 million passengers in 2016, Barcelona-El Prat airport has once again lived a record year in all figures: it has increased by 11.2% the number of travelers compared to the previous year, has added a 6 , 6% more operations, totaling 307,864 takeoffs and landings and also has grown more than 13% in air cargo, surpassing the 132 million kilos transported in airplanes pure freight or in the cellars of airplanes of passage.
Of all the airports with which Barcelona has direct flights, nine of them exceeded one million passengers with El Prat. Three are Spanish: Madrid, Palma and Ibiza and the rest Europeans: London-Gatwick, Rome-Fiumicino, Amsterdam-Schiphol, Paris-De Gaulle, Paris-Orly and Frankfurt.
Of these traffic can be clearly distinguished two aspects: the point to point, that is to say, passengers that specifically target the city of destination, as it is the case of Ibiza, Palma, Orly or Gatwick and others where the link flights have great weight , As they are large European hubs of companies like Air France / KLM, in the footsteps of Charles de Gaulle and Schiphol, Lufthansa in case of Frankfurt, Alitalia in Fiumicino (although this would be the less striking hub) and Iberia in Madrid to link Barcelona with the wide American network of the Spanish airline.
The chart showing that El Prat comes out of the crisis better than Barajas
By 2017, in addition to a safe increase in passenger numbers and operations in El Prat, there will be numerous changes in the behavior of the ticket that travel to and from Barcelona thanks to a good number of new features in the long-haul sector, wanted in an airport more than consolidated in Europe and that wants to gain weight in the world map with new direct flights to America and Asia.
On Thursday, a direct route to Hong Kong, which will be operated by one of the most prestigious and award-winning companies in the world, will be officially inaugurated: Cathay Pacific, founded 70 years ago in the former colony which launched direct flights to Spain in summer 2016 arriving in Madrid.
The icing on the cake in Hong Kong
Only a year later will also fly to Barcelona with its most modern aircraft: the Airbus A350, which will cover an unsatisfied demand of about 62,000 people, who travel between the two cities having to go through a third with flights , according to data managed by CDRA, El Prat Air Route Development Committee.
Another great airline news for this year will be the direct flight from Barcelona to Seoul, in South Korea, a link that is not a novelty, since it has already been operating under special flights, and now, already consolidated option , These links become regular from the hand of the award-winning Korean Air. Also from Asia two flights are recovered that were canceled during almost two years: the routes to Islamabad and Lahore operated by PIA, Pakistan International Airlines.
For its part, the holding IAG, which includes operators British Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia, Iberia Express and Vueling also promises novelties for 2017 with a bet that has caused surprise and feelings found between businessmen traveling from Barcelona: joy and also some skepticism after the news that the group will base in El Prat some Airbus A330 with intercontinental reach to fly to some destinations in Asia and America that have not yet been 100% specified, nor which will finally be the operator, although they could Be Los Angeles, San Francisco, Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, Havana and Tokyo.
The latter is perhaps one of the most anticipated destinations on both sides of the line, as each year just over 162,000 passengers fly between Barcelona and Tokyo through an intermediate hub.
Will there be flight to Tokyo?
The IAG bet creating a likely new brand to experience long-haul flights at tighter prices would be clearly inspired by the company that will star in one of the most anticipated take-offs of 2017: Norwegian, which has already consolidated in Barcelona as one of the Major domestic and European flight operators, has already launched its new long-haul flights this summer: four routes that will operate its brand-new Boeing 787 Dreamliner based in Barcelona and fly to Los Angeles, Oakland, next to San Francisco , Fort Lauderdale, north of Miami and New York-Newark, which is the only route that was already being covered by another airline currently, in this case, United Airlines.
These four flights to the United States are the first of an ambitious Norwegian intercontinental expansion from Barcelona that also targets destinations in South America such as Santiago de Chile and Buenos Aires, although not officially confirmed, although unofficially they are already almost assured, as apparently also appears to be a new direct route with China, in this case Shanghai, the second one from Barcelona, since the one of Beijing, that serves China Airlines, already has some seasons in active and last year reached the 60,000 passengers.
As for other long-distance routes already consolidated, the one that has a greater volume of passage is the one of Dubai, with the double daily flight of Emirates in its Airbus A380, that in 2016 carried 532,500 passengers. Most of them did not stay there, but Emirates airport was a point of passage between the airline’s extensive network of Asian destinations and Catalunya, similar to what happened last year with Istanbul-Ataturk and Doha-Hamad , the hubs of Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways. The first had 371,400 passengers from and to Barcelona and the second exceeded 352,000.
The fourth most important long-haul route from Barcelona in terms of passenger volume was a classic: New York-JFK, with just over 326,000 passengers, plus 126,000 who flew to or from Newark, the second airport serving that city.
New York, fourth route in volume
Bogotá was consolidated as the fifth long-distance line from Barcelona thanks to Avianca‘s bet with its direct flights between Catalunya and Colombia, used by more than 168,000 passengers while the line to Sao Paulo reached in 2016 the 150,000 users thanks to two companies : LatAm and Singapore Airlines, although the latter withdrew from it because of the Brazilian recession, which made the route lose attractive and has remained with the line that has been operating for a decade: The Prat-Changi in Singapore Last year was used by 72,500 passengers.
Other intercontinental routes from Barcelona that had remarkable numbers were several to North America: Miami, with 147,000 passengers; Toronto, with 136,000; Atlanta, with 94,000, despite being seasonal only from May to October; Philadelphia, with 86,000; Montreal, with 80,000; Washington, with 61,000, and Charlotte, with 58,000.
Notable figures in North America
In addition to the flight to the economic capital of Brazil, Latam also launched a second route in the last days of 2016: Lima, which in a few days was used by 3,000 passengers and aims to be a line that in 2017 can reach notable figures, style of another that flies to the south cone directly: Buenos Aires-Ezeiza with Aerolíneas Argentinas, which surpassed 122,000 users last year and during this time it will grow due to the arrival of new operators to this Catalunya-Argentina link.
As for Africa, the figures are more discreet and the more remote flights operated from El Prat remain at the gates of 20,000 passengers, as in the case of Banjul or around 10,000 in the case of Dakar and Accra. With everything already accumulated and what is to come, 2017 will be a very interesting aeronautical exercise for the installation that Aena manages in El Prat.
Air Nostrum will resume the route on March 26 at the express request of the Valencian government
The Valencian company Air Nostrum recovers the air route between Valencia and Barcelona, after years without air service between the second and the third capital of Spain. The first plane will start on March 26 and the intention is to get return flights the same day, company president Carlos Bertomeu announced at a press conference with the president of the Generalitat Valenciana, Ximo Puig, and the Minister of Economy, Vicent Soler.
According to Bertomeu, it is a “risk bet”, since it is a “complicated route”: “Although it has volume, the average income is low.” Likewise, he has revealed that recovering this airline has been an express and repeated request of the Valencian government at a time when the railway connection is “deteriorated”. Puig stressed that it seems “unusual” that there is still no AVE (high speed train) between Valencia and Barcelona.
Bertomeu has said that the project is starting to walk and has not committed to give a daily number of flights, but has expressed its intention to make it possible to make the trip back and forth on the same day between the two cities. It has also committed to launch “specific flights to bring Catalans to the Fallas,” celebrations that take place in March.
At the same time, Ximo Puig has announced a subsidy line with Air Nostrum for “ecomarketing”: through an initial four-year agreement, the company’s planes will be “painted” with different cultural, festive and tourist motifs of the Valencian Which operates the company. In this way, Air Nostrum and the public company Society Thematic Projects (SPT) commit to invest 6 million euros each. The first year will decorate 20 aircraft progressively; The first will deal with the declaration of the Fallas as Intangible Heritage of Unesco. The promotion will change every year depending on what the Tourism Council determines.
Regarding the possibility that the aid could be interpreted as a subsidy to the route Valencia-Barcelona, the Valencian president has been forceful: “The Generalitat Valenciana is not going to subsidize that flight nor any”. Bertomeu has insisted that the new route and the tourism promotion campaign are “two absolutely separate issues”.
The president of Air Nostrum has framed Valencia-Barcelona flights in an attempt to boost inland tourism, which has decreased by 4% in the last year and is “the one that rises the average cost”, with trips of congresses and end of week. Likewise, it has announced that for this route the company will make a “selection of cabin crew of Valencian”.
Today the first plane has taken off from the Catalan capital and is expected to last until the service on October 29
United Airlines, the result of the union between Continental Airlines and United, has launched Thursday seasonal, daily, nonstop service between Barcelona and Washington, to mark the tenth anniversary of the company in the Catalan capital connection. The flights will be operated by Boeing 767-400 aircraft model, with a capacity of 242 seats and is expected to last until the service on 29 October. The US company started business in Barcelona on 18 May 2006. In these 10 years transported about 970,000 customers in more than 6,000 flights on the direct route between Barcelona and New York.
Thorsten Lettnin, director of United Airlines in Europe, and Sonia Corrochano, director of the Barcelona-El Prat Airport, presided over the opening ceremony, which took place in the airport terminal T1 Barcelona. During the event, Lettnin stressed the importance of this new route as it will connect Barcelona to anywhere in the United States in less time, thanks to the hub (airport that an airline uses as a transfer point to cover their destinations) that United Airlines has in the US capital.
Meanwhile, Corrochano stressed that Washington is a destination that has been working in recent years. “It’s very important to have this direct flight, originally scheduled for fewer months but that given the good acceptance, the company has extended until the end of October,” he said.
United Airlines operates in Spain since 1991. Currently, there are no stairs flights from Barcelona and Madrid to New York / Newark. Last May 6 was launched seasonal connection between Madrid and Washington / Dulles, also in daily frequency and nonstop. The commercial director of the company in Spain, Antonio de Toro, was pleased to offer, for the third consecutive year, US customers “further options” with this service between the two capitals, as well as the launch today of the new service without scales between Barcelona and Washington.
In 2015, a total of 3.5 million passengers made intercontinental scale
There is a demand to open new long-haul flights from Barcelona. The Development Committee of Air Routes (CDRA) of the Catalan capital is convinced of it. This body, composed of Aena, the Generalitat, Barcelona City Council and the Chamber of Commerce, which supports data. Of the 5.6 million intercontinental travelers or from El Prat last year, only two million flew directly. The remaining 3.6 million correspond to connecting routes with other airports. Thus, the objective for the coming years is to convert some of these direct links, mainly to North America and Asia-Pacific operations being treated with airlines.
Countries identified as targets in the strategic plan 2016-2017 of the CDRA are those who already have a critical mass that justifies having direct flights. Tokyo tops, which last year had 164,385 passengers to or from the Catalan capital, all indirect. In Seoul, only 12,447 traveled nonstop by 139,188 they did with connection. There are nine other airports intercontinental destinations with more than 50,000 annual passengers flying via other citieslong.
President CDRA and secretary of Infrastructures and Mobility of the Generalitat, Ricard Font, moved that the main efforts focus on opening direct flights to California (San Francisco or Los Angeles), Boston and Tokyo, although he acknowledged it will not be easy because although there is demand to justify the operation from the commercial point of view, airlines may not have enough planes to meet these routes.
In any case, the CDRA has been proposed that within two years Barcelona enter the group of the 42 major global airports with more than 10,000 passengers daily intercontinental routes (direct and indirect flights). El Prat current-mind has about 8,000. A tool that can help position the Catalan capital in this market long haul is that Barcelona will host in September next year, the World Routes Forum, an event that has the participation of airlines around the world year . also it wants to grow in cargo freight, transport interests the great Eastern customers. Synergies with cruises and intermodality with train are other aspects that are to continue strengthening.
Those responsible for the CDRA did yesterday balance of the first ten years of the agency, which was created to capture new intercontinental routes. At that time, this radio traffic El Prat has doubled from 2.2 million to 5.6 million travelers and 17 to 34 destinations, with some as prominent as Dubai, Banjul, Singapore and Bogota. Passengers on direct flights have increased sixfold, from 345 thousand to 2 million, the weekly frequencies have tripled (from 72 to 234) and seats offered, quintupled (from 324,000 to 1,600,000 per year).
The airport director, Sonia Corrochano, recalled that last year the absolute record of passengers (39.7 million), up 5% from 2014 and further growth of long-haul (+ 12%) fought. In the first quarter of 2016, the trend continues to rise (+ 16% in total passengers and + 17% on intercontinental routes).
The main novelties for this summer season are increased frequencies Montreal and Toronto (Air Canada and Air Transcat), New York (Delta) and a new Washington (United). Also they grow Tel Aviv (Al) and increases the ability to Dubai (Emirates). TAM increases frequencies to Sao Paulo and opens Ryanair flight to Marrakech. In addition, Vueling, opens route to Constantine (Algeria) and Cape Verde and increases frequencies to Algiers, Oran, Tangier and Tel Aviv.
An Irish boyfriend gets caught in a bar close to falling asleep and local in their stag-party
The party was so intense and probably locking the room so cumbersome that a group of Irish last weekend traveled to Barcelona to dismiss singleness of one boyfriend were left forgotten in the bathroom of a bar and he pulled down the shade.
No one noticed the absence until after several hours when, as in the hotel, began to wonder where he was O’Sullivan, or perhaps called O’Connor, or might respond by O’Ryan or any other typical Irish surname .
So, O’Sullivan waited for hours to go out after waking up in a small bar street Anselm Clavé Barcelona and believe this was a nightmare or a hangover harmful intake wakefulness.
O’Sullivan was dressed in classical dancer. Many British and Irish groups who like to visit Barcelona to celebrate stag. Some even reserve hotel because they know the night of drinking will be passed and then return in one of the morning flights.
The group itself had O’Sullivan hotel. Its members came Saturday afternoon and, according to people familiar with the story of what happened, they went wandering around Old Town, had dinner and were drinking in the area of La Rambla.
We closed some of the premises visited and in the street, began to walk when they finished behind the Military Government. A small shop specializing in cocktails opened his eyes before.
At three in the morning, it seemed the ideal place. And they kept drinking and toasting with the boyfriend who can never make an ugly colleagues who have so carefully organized one last spree before marriage.
Were not disclosed details of the course of revelry in the bar Street Anselm Clave, but it is known that after five local managers put an end to the orgy.
“The groom had to fall asleep in the sink because the home is no more than 45 square meters. At any other point would have drawn attention, “says a h. O’Sullivan’s friends feared what was later confirmed.
They returned to the bar still half dressed. The groom replied through the metal shutter and stuck the fingers by the upper holes. The owner of the place was untraceable. So came catalan police and firefighters. Just 12:00h afternoon, the Irish dancer dress boy was released

The El Prat airport sector maintained the upward trend thanks to the tourist positioning of Barcelona and the promotion of low cost airlines. And it has not peaked yet
El Prat touch the sky. It will record on record. The Barcelona airport has six years winning passengers. A success story that does not seem to end. As recently said Kenny Jacobs, director of marketing for Ryanair, “it seems that everyone wants to come to Barcelona”.
How is possible? Xavier Fageda has worked in recent years side by side with the academic Germà Bel in airport issues. “The growth of El Prat in recent years has several explanations. The main capacity was expanded with the new runway in 2004 and the new terminal in 2009. The other key factor is the expansion of tourism in Barcelona and this has led to low cost to take positions. Also important has been the good management of the leading company in El Prat Vueling “.
Sonia Corrochano, director of the airport of El Prat de Barcelona highlights some oddities. “The city is among the four preferred destinations in Europe in social networks. Additionally statistics show that many people who come here for tourism repeated. And eight out of ten cruise passengers arriving by plane to embark on one of the cruises from the city. And this is a growing sector. ”
Spain as a whole is experiencing a sweet period from the tourist point of view because passenger traffic growing more than 25 months. The rise in international passenger traffic is driving, especially following the collapse of competitive markets such as Tunisia and Egypt. But it has also diversified its proposal.
According to the hotel association CEHAT, the supply of sun and sand has risen from more than 90% of Spanish tourism at 72%. “Few European countries have an airport network as extensive quality and quality as in Spain that connects so many different cities,” said Albert Grau and Bruno Hallé are responsible for tourism consultant Magma
Barcelona takes advantage of this situation because it offers everything at once: vacation tourism destination and insurance business and convention town. The current improvement in the economy is the icing on the cake. From Magma stress that, for example, “people company values the urban tourism and leisure. In a context of economic recovery, this group of travelers, less seasonality, it becomes crucial. ” These experts also stand out as the launch of El Prat “it is the reflection of a successful tourism promotion policy on the part of local institutions in recent years.”
“The surveys we conduct among our customers indicate that Barcelona is one of the (if not the) favorite destinations. Therefore, next year will transport more than 6.3 million people in El Prat, 500,000 more than last year, “José Espartero, director of marketing for Ryanair Spain, the company that transports passengers in Spanish skies. “Historically, the city has recorded more incoming flights, but we are seeing that departing flights are growing very significantly. Next summer we will increase our network of routes from Barcelona, with 3 new destinations to Berlin, Hamburg and Marrakech, “said Espartero.
In 2012 EasyJet had a base in Barajas. Now they have just installed in Barcelona. “Twenty years ago El Prat airport was the first in which we operate outside the UK for what is happening is not surprising at all,” recalls Javier Gandara, CEO of EasyJet to Spain and Portugal. “Behind the success of El Prat she is the fact that it is a destination in itself. And the low cost airlines, which previously flew from secondary airports, which have assumed and positioned themselves here, “Gandara said. There is a temporary factor that also plays into the Barcelona airport right now says this executive of EasyJet. “With the drop in oil prices, many low cost to them would not come before the accounts have decided to operate again. And this means that there is more supply, more competition and therefore more traffic. ”
Given these figures, Aena rubs his hands. Because the Barcelona airport, living an uptrend, is very profitable. In 2014 El Prat won twelve times Barajas and represents more than half of the benefits of airport management. “The reform of the commercial offer of the T2 and increased traffic generated higher revenues,” said airport sources.
The growth of the Barcelona terminal those years has gone hand in hand with Vueling. Fernando Estrada, Director of Strategy and Alliances of this airline believes “this pace is sustained, steady and it has nothing to bubble. Their bases are solid. Now after years we have created a hub in Barcelona, with passengers throughout the year and put the city in place in the airport market. The proof is that now more and more long-haul airlines have decided to come here. ”
Indeed, one of the common criticisms is that Barcelona has yet to lead in the long haul. But this aspect is also changing. Since 2006 the number of intercontinental routes has doubled. This week Emirates, announced that it will operate two daily flights between Barcelona and Dubai with the A380, the world’s largest aircraft. This introduction involves increasing the capacity by 32% over the current long-haul offer this airline.
“This reflects our confidence and commitment to the market in Barcelona,” explains Fernando Suarez de Gongora, CEO of Emirates. “We see potential both for those traveling to Barcelona from Asia, Australia, Africa and the Middle East as well as for travel to these regions, whether for business or tourist purposes”. Xavier Fageda states that “in relation to long-haul flights, the improvement on the growing presence of Asian and American airlines in the European market also tend to be positioned outside the major European hubs that are highly saturated, for example in Barcelona”.
Does El Prat ability to make this leap ?. Technically, yes. Corrochano recalls that current facilities can manage to reach 55 million passengers, ie 35% more than the current traffic. “You may add a level comparable to other T2 volume,” he says. You can also increase to 25% the number of operations per hour. The skies are clear.
The plane of the world’s largest passenger replaced from 1 June B777-200LR untill now carried out the connection
The Emirates airline will operate two daily flights between Barcelona and Dubai with the A380 passenger plane of the world, from June 1, 2016 replaced the B777-200LR so far operated one of the two largest daily services.
As reported Thursday the company said in a statement, Barcelona becomes a destination served exclusively to Emirates A380*. With the introduction of the A380 on the Madrid-Dubai route last August 1 and the two daily A380 flights from Barcelona, Emirates will operate the next three of four daily flights from Spain with the largest aircraft in the world “for company year with regular flights with this model plane in Spain “of, he stressed the company.
The introduction of a second A380 in Barcelona involves increasing the capacity by 32% over the current bid and offer 2,068 seats per day, about three times the initial offering of 2012, which was of 720 seats daily. The Emirates A380 offers 517 seats, of which 14 private suites in First Class, 76 seats bed in ‘business’ and 427 spacious seating in class ‘Economy’.
Airberlin doubles the offer to Dusseldorf
On the other hand, Airberlin will increase its weekly frequency between Barcelona and Dusseldorf from one to two flights a week from May 2016, it informed the German airline in a statement Thursday. The company said that this decision is “proof of its commitment to the Spanish market” and its importance in their overall strategy. As part of its plan for next year, the company will consolidate its presence in its two ‘hubs’ international, Berlin and Dusseldorf, with the addition of new destinations and expanding frequencies.
*The Airbus A380 is a double-deck, wide-body, four-engine jet airliner manufactured by the European aircraft company Airbus. It is the world’s largest passenger airliner, and the airports at which it operates have upgraded facilities to accommodate it. It was initially namedAirbus A3XX and designed to challenge Boeing‘s monopoly in the large-aircraft market. The A380 made its first flight on 27 April 2005 and entered commercial service in October 2007 with Singapore Airlines.
The A380’s upper deck extends along the entire length of the fuselage, with a width equivalent to a wide-body aircraft. This gives the A380-800’s cabin 550 square metres (5,920 sq ft) of usable floor space, 40% more than the next largest airliner, the Boeing 747-8, and provides seating for 525 people in a typical three-class configuration or up to 853 people in an all-economy class configuration. The A380-800 has a design range of 8,500 nautical miles (15,700 km), sufficient to fly nonstop from Dallas, USA to Sydney, Australia, and a cruising speed of Mach 0.85 (about 900 km/h, 560 mph or 490 kn at cruising altitude).
