Montmeló recovers the spirit of Montjuïc during a weekend

A trip to the past to awaken the memories of motor fans. From tomorrow Friday until next Sunday, the Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya, in Montmeló, will host the seventh edition of the Spirit of Montjuïc. It is a weekend of races and activities carried out with classic vehicles, the same models that were used in the old circuit of the so-called magical mountain of the Catalan capital in the competitions of the 60s and 70s.action mythical machines such as the Chevron B21, the Ferrari 512 or the Porsche 910, among many others.

The event is an ode to nostalgia in which, according to the organization, there are no “closed spaces” and fans can get close to the cars that they admired decades ago in Montjuïc. It is also a time when owners of old vehicles can enjoy the winding layout of Montmeló.

The program is completed with a wide range of activities. For example, a market is organized with vintage clothing and accessories, antiques, pieces for collection vehicles, magazines and vintage vinyl.

There is also an amusement area with merry-go-rounds, bumper cars and a circus like those of before with tribute to TV clowns and Charlie Rivel. Everything is enlivened with a series of musical performances. The organization encourages attending dress period and provides a hairdresser specialized in rockabilly environment.

Seat, which always collaborates with the initiative, will pay tribute to the 50th anniversary of model 124 with an exhibition in its tent of 600 m2 2.“You can see the Seat a million, which commemorated when the brand reached that number of cars sold and raffled among employees,” explains the head of Historical Cars Seat, Isidre Lopez. He will also devise pedal vehicles with which children will be racing on board small replicas of vintage cars.

In addition, Seat will exhibit the first official car of rally driver Carlos Sainz, a Seat Panda who drove years before proclaiming himself world champion.

Another brand, Renault, takes the opportunity to organize the Passion Renault Experience and gives away free tickets. “It’s not a place to sell cars, we want to provide a positive experience for visitors to the event,” says Renault’s Communication Director in Spain, Javier Sánchez.

The French brand expects 25,000 attendees at its facilities in Montmeló, who will be able to test their latest news, electric vehicles and drive “competitive sports cars under the tutelage of drivers”. There will also be road safety workshops for children and various activities with the intention of creating a “family atmosphere”.

Finally, during the weekend the Clio Cup will take place, emblematic competition that this year also celebrates its 50th anniversary.

The Formula One teams are no strangers to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya (formerly known as the Circuit de Catalunya); not only have they raced there every year since 1991, they also conduct extensive testing at the venue.

Familiarity does not, however, lessen the challenge for car or driver. Barcelona’s mix of high- and low-speed corners, plus its abrasive and rather bumpy track surface, makes for a physically and mechanically taxing race.

Tyre wear is particularly high and the varying winds that cut across the circuit mean an optimum set-up can be hard to find.

For spectators Elf corner is among the best places to watch, as it is one of the track’s few overtaking opportunities. For the drivers it is the final two turns, known collectively as New Holland, which provide one of the biggest challenges of the season. A fast exit is essential in order to maximise speed down the start-finish straight into Elf.

2014 marked the 24th time Barcelona has hosted the Spanish Grand Prix. Michael Schumacher has been the most successful driver at the circuit, with a total of six victories. Among the current drivers, Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa have all won there.

China Confronts Tesla with a car developed in Montmeló (Barcelona)

The next day 25, the fifth-largest automotive group in China, BAIC will present at the Beijing Motor Show a prototype electric sports vehicle that wants to prove he can stand up to Tesla. This prototype has been developed by engineering Campos Racing in Montmeló (Barcelona).

BAIC is a group with 130,000 employees in China, which manufactures all ranges of vehicles, from passenger cars to industrial combustion and electric: has five models of electric utility market. Baic contacted Campos Racing after Nelson Piquet won last year’s Formula E with Team China team with team Campos.

Campos Racing was founded in 1998 by which it was Formula 1 driver Adrian Campos and discoverer of Fernando Alonso. In 2009 was the first Spanish team in Formula 1, and now serves as team-with its engineers, mechanics, pilots trucks-, brands and sponsors and participates in major championships (except F1). Alzira and facilities in Montmelo, adds some 120 people, mostly engineers and mechanics, and a turnover of around 14 million.

“Besides being team competition, we decided to go for ability to develop electric vehicles,” explains Joan Orus, technical director and one of the partners of Campos Racing. “There is now a boom in electric car, and we take all the experience we have for all brands that want to develop technology and prototyping.” For this drive the R & D center in Montmeló where already 15 people work. “We will seek other agreements, we look at China or India marks, and in three years we grow up to 60 or 80 people,” adds Orús.

BAIC prototype sports car with a range of 300 km that can be charged in 45 minutes; everything went Montmelo, with an engine that is modified on an existing model on the market. The project, with a budget of 2 million, has been developed in six months. After its presentation in Beijing, thinks Baic make a limited number of the vehicle in 2017, but the bet is to incorporate the latest technology in electric car racing their street vehicles. “We want to help sell in America and in Europe,” adds Orús.
