EFFICIENT AND SUSTAINABLE
The Port of Barcelona is the European port that grows most (+ 32% in container traffic in 2017) and also the first on the continent and the Mediterranean in the movement of cruise passengers. With the aim of being even more efficient and continuing to grow in a sustainable manner, the Digital Port project has been launched.
Barcelona has been a pioneer port in the application of new technologies, as demonstrated by the creation in 1999 of the digital platform of the Port Community, Portic. Now, almost two decades later, two key facts converge.
On the one hand, the change in the logistics sector has accelerated and the need for information for quick decision-making is more urgent than ever. On the other hand, the development of new technologies facilitates a much more intelligent management of the infrastructure, which allows to offer agile solutions to the client.
“Nowadays infrastructures have become a commodity, where the decisive factor is good management”, argues the president of the Port of Barcelona, Sixte Cambra. “What sets us apart from the Port of Barcelona and allows us to compete as a port is not just the infrastructure, but the quality, reliability and efficiency of the services we offer,” he adds.
WHAT IS AN INTELLIGENT PORT?
The smart concept does not have a single definition. For the Port of Barcelona, it encompasses six areas (logistics, mobility, environment, economy, social sphere and governance) in which it progresses transversally to consolidate itself as a smart port of reference.
Thus, smart logistics refers to the use of technology to make the entire logistics chain more efficient and predictive.
Smart mobility focuses on the optimization of local and international accessibility and puts the emphasis on intermodality.
Smart environment integrates actions to develop a sustainable management and to minimize pollution.
The creation of employment and the promotion of internationalization, innovation and entrepreneurship promoted by the Port of Barcelona contribute to the smart economy, while integration with the city, social cohesion and the cultural and touristic values it generates are related to The smart people concept.
Finally, the Port of Barcelona is also committed to a smart model of governance, with efficient management of public resources and a firm defense of transparency and participation.
In this context, technology and innovation become key elements to provide information in real time, offer new services from the flow of data and digitize processes. “We understand by smart deploying the most advanced technological means (sensors, license plate readers, monitoring stations, video analytics, telecommunications, etc.) to have all the possible information in real time. On the other hand, digitalization consists of taking advantage of all this data to create applications and services aimed at the client, which will allow them to be more efficient and competitive, “says the general deputy director of Organization and Internal Resources of the Port, Catalina Grimalt.
Several of these actions are under development, but many others are already operational, such as the Virtual Gates service or the Port Links project. The first one offers information in real time about the level of activity in all accesses to the port and container terminals, while Port Links is an application that allows to build and compare logistics chains through the Port of Barcelona, offering accurate information based on to the available offer of services (transit times, CO2 emissions of each section, etc.).
Other projects related to business intelligence, e-administration and cybersecurity are in the development phase and will be implemented in the medium term to complete the ambitious Digital Port program.
