The project of huge Japanese firm Nikken Sekkei relieves the Foster´s one.
In September 2007 the club presented its previous project for a new Camp Nou. Joan Laporta presided over the club. And Sir Norman Foster was the winner in the contest. The British architect has drafted its proposal from a specification of five pages provided by the club. In its proposal acquired prominence formalism, it resulted in a scaly skin -evocative the roof of Gaudi House Batlló-, with the colors of the Barca shirt and the senyera. It was a time when in Spain built many star architects, sometimes with unbridled expressiveness and budgetary largesse.
This time the club has acted differently: he gave the contestants hundred pages of conditions, from detailing the number of seats to the VIP boxes, through the suggested types of cover for the stadium.
With so extensive specifications Barca sought to achieve the two main objectives of reform -catch up with regard to safety regulations and optimize the performance of the Camp Nou (raising there until additional 50 million euros per year). And, too, it led to the formation of teams of contestants who would represent the local profession, accredited architectural quality, and powerful engineering and architecture, based in the US, Britain, Japan and other countries where their role are dominating the architects, unlike what makes the tradition in Spain. They are engineers, most of them with experience in the construction of large sports facilities, always with very strict criteria for compliance schedule and budget.
In short, the club has been betting on the Laporta era for the iconic, colorful and stellar signature work, to bet on the Bartomeu time for a work that supports high-capacity engineering and diffuse aesthetic identity.
Who’s who in the team that will design the Camp Nou? What are credited? How will your synergy? What can we expect of the work Nikken Sekkei presented yesterday and Pascual-Ausió?
Nikken Sekkei, formed from a construction company that was born in 1900, is one of the largest engineering and architectural firms in the world, with nearly 2,500 employees, headquartered in Tokyo, and regional offices in the Far East and the Persian Gulf. He has participated in 20,000 projects in 40 countries. Among its sports facilities are the Saitama Super Arena in Chuo-Ko, and the Tokyo Dome. It has built skyscrapers and all kinds of private and public facilities. Its Catalan partners in the club, the study of Joan Pascual and Ramon Ausió, based in Barcelona, has a dozen professionals. In his curriculum apartment blocks dominate, such as 200 that ended in several towers of Barceloneta, twenty years ago; among his most recent works, the Diagonal Zero (Barcelona) hotel or the Electra (Terrassa) school.
This difference in muscle between the two partners winners of contest-and something similar happened in the Palau Blaugrana contest, won by Hok (1,800 employees) and TAC-Barcelona suggests that the club has passed the time of architectural and enters starsystem of engineering. It also suggests the elimination of contestants strong personality among the last fallen Bofill, Ferrater, RCR, Matthew or BIG-. And even the career of one who has served as project manager of the operation Espai Barça, which includes the new Camp Nou.
